Walking with God: A Teen's Journey
Hey Cross Woven fam, it’s shyanne here!
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what it means to walk with God as a teenager. Sometimes, it feels like life is moving at a million miles an hour. Between school, friendships, family stuff, social media, and just trying to figure out who we are, there’s so much going on. And in the middle of all that, it can feel like God is just another thing on a long list of things we’re supposed to keep up with. But here’s the thing—I’ve realized that God’s not just some item on a checklist. Walking with Him isn’t about doing more; it’s about letting Him be part of everything we do.
The Everyday Journey
When I think about a journey, I picture something big—like a cross-country road trip or an adventure in a faraway place. But our journey with God doesn’t always look like that. Sometimes, it’s more like a series of small steps—like waking up every day and choosing to trust Him, even when things don’t make sense.
As teenagers, we’re all on a journey. We’re learning who we are, what we believe, and what we want out of life. That can be pretty overwhelming at times. But what gives me peace is knowing that I’m not on this journey alone. God is with me every step of the way.
Figuring It Out
One of the hardest parts of being a teen is that feeling of figuring it all out. We’re asked a lot of big questions: What do you want to do with your life? What are your goals? Who do you want to be? And the truth is, we don’t always have the answers to those questions yet—and that’s okay! Here’s the amazing part: God already knows the answers. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us of this: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Our job isn’t to have everything figured out right now. Our job is to trust that God is guiding us, step by step, even when we can’t see the whole path ahead.
When Things Get Tough
Let’s be real—this journey with God isn’t always easy. There are moments when life feels heavy, confusing, or just plain hard. Maybe it’s a tough situation at school, problems with friends, or struggles with our own identity. During these times, it’s easy to feel distant from God, like He’s far away or not listening. But that’s when it’s most important to remember that God never leaves us. Deuteronomy 31:6 says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
I know it sounds simple, but leaning on God in those tough moments can make all the difference. Whether it’s through prayer, reading Scripture, or just taking a quiet moment to reflect on His promises, God is there, even when life feels like a mess.
Growing Along the Way
Here’s the cool part about this journey with God: it’s a journey of growth. We’re not supposed to stay the same. Just like we’re growing physically, mentally, and emotionally, we’re also growing spiritually. And that growth doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a process—one that’s full of ups and downs, victories and challenges. But every step of the way, God is shaping us into the people He’s called us to be.
Sometimes we might feel like we’re not “good enough” in our faith, like we’re failing God because we don’t pray enough, or we’re not “perfect” Christians. But God isn’t looking for perfection—He’s looking for a heart that’s open and willing to grow. Philippians 1:6 says, “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” In other words, God is patient with us. He’s working in us, even when we don’t see it.
Finding Our Purpose
As teens, we’re constantly asked, “What’s your purpose?” It’s easy to feel like we need to have a perfect answer for that, but here’s something I’ve learned: our purpose is less about what we do and more about who we are in Christ. Sure, we’ll have jobs, goals, and dreams, but our ultimate purpose is to love God and love others (Matthew 22:37-39). When we focus on that, everything else starts to fall into place.
Final Thoughts
This journey with God isn’t always going to be straightforward. There will be twists and turns, and moments when we feel lost. But I believe that as long as we keep our eyes on Him, we’ll find our way. So, whether you’re on a spiritual high right now or feeling a little lost, just know that God is walking this journey with you. He’s got plans for you, and He’s guiding you through every step—even the ones that feel shaky.
We’re not perfect, and we don’t have to be. What matters is that we keep walking, trusting that God is leading us exactly where we need to go. So, let’s keep going together, Cross Woven fam. Let’s keep walking this journey with God, one step at a time.
Much love, Shyanne
